Transcendental Meditation: Mechanics of the technique (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi)
www.mum.edu The Transcendental Meditation technique uses the natural tendency of the mind to go toward greater happiness, so the mind effortlessly transcends to its most silent state. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, speaking at Lake Louise, Canada (1968),Maharishi University of Management (MUM) offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the arts, sciences, business, and humanities. The University is accredited through the doctoral level by the Higher Learning Commission. Founded in 1971 by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the University features Consciousness-Based education to develop students’ inner potential. All students and faculty practice the Transcendental Meditation technique, which extensive published research has found boosts learning ability, improves brain functioning, and reduces stress. Maharishi University uses the block system in which each student takes one course at a time. Students report they learn more without the stress of taking 4-5 courses at once. The University has a strong focus on sustainability and natural health, and serves organic vegetarian meals. The BS in Sustainable Living is MUM’s most popular undergraduate major. Hello super smart folks that like to read.
OK, I left a few things out of that video that I’ll say here. One thing that people seem to have a problem with is the fact that it costs 00US to learn TM. I personally don’t have a problem with that price seeing how people spend many people spend much more than that on “stupid” things all the time (beer, smoking, drugs, cars, electro gadgets, etc.) Also, it appears that you also get check up done throughout the year to make sure things are coming along OK. AND David Lynch has an organization that provides scholarships to people that would like to learn the technique, but can’t afford it (like me!
) It’s thanks to David Lynch and his org, that I learned it. His website is here: www.davidlynchfoundation.org I never heard of Mr. Lynch until visiting the school in January, but seeing him live was awesome. He’s a VERY cool guy. I have mad respect for him. Here’s the visitor weekend “this past weekend”: www.lynchweekend.org Something else “controversial” that I found in my internet searching is some guy that seems to have very negative feelings about TM (I won’t provide a link, but you shouldn’t have trouble finding it if you looked) saying that TM is the same as being hypnotized and the only reason people experience the things they do is because their teachers tells them “You might experience XYZ.” I can understand why someone might think that’s the case (depending on how their experience learning it went) but I personally …

Great video – have to watch it over and over.
@Yeaahright When you learn TM, your personal instructor will make sure that you have the correct mantra and are using it correctly. So if you’ve already learned TM, then go to your local TM center and ask to have your meditation checked.
@nokialeopardi And that’s why you need a trained teacher — you can’t force your mind to settle down, you need a technique.
@BradBrassman Definitely yes. Transcendental Meditation takes the mind beyond thought, lets it settle down completely. If you have to be constantly thinking about what to do and whether you’re doing it correctly, then your mind can’t settle down and you won’t transcend. So when you first learn, you need a trained teacher who can make sure you’re meditating correctly and having good experiences.
They say it is best to enrol on a course with a trained teacher, and not try from a video or book, would you tend to agree with this?
meditation means following: first step-do not think of anything. second step-do not think of your obligation that you shouldn’t think of anything. third, fourth fifth and etc steps are principally the same- your thought condition gets deeper and deeper until your thoughts (information in the brain) are absolutely stopped- nirvana.
i significantly disagree with maharishi.
I think the nature of the mind is misery. In meditation we shut down the mind by letting go off of it and experience happiness that can only be gained through the absence of the mind. whenever our mind is active it corrupts, perverts, distorts everything and the more we let go the more we can experience bliss again.
how do we use our mantra?? do we repeat it over and over in our heads?
@SyqLAWL The website tm (dot) org has lots of info about TM. On their home page, click “Learn to meditate”. Also, students at MUM learn as part of their college classes; check out our website mum (dot) edu.
A guitarist i like to listen to practices this type of meditation, he says it gives increases his speed, accuracy and focus when playing shows..i wanna get more into if thts the case lol..how and where can i learn how to do this?
@b34EverAndEver go to your local library and check out this book called
“Transcendental Meditation” -by Jack Forem.
great read, and eye opening theories, facts, and techniques
I wonder why it took me till i was 19 to even be introduced to transcendental meditation..
i have this book on MMY, and it was written by Jack Forem.
it pretty much enlightened me, and i feel that by the time i turn 21, i will have done great things for the world.
=)
This clears up a lot for me. Many thanks!
I wish I could reach a level of conciousness as these masters.
What is meditation?
wonderful clear and easy to comprehend
Maharishi is a genius and his Transcendental Meditation is such a wonderfully simple technique to bring success and peace to anyone and everyone
Thanks for sharing!
after 35 yrs i am coming back to TM
Transcendental Meditation is the best. I feel so lucky that I was told about it.
Thanks Maharishi
great video. this maharishi guy makes me laugh. the knowledge sounds real as well.
Maharishi describes transcendental meditation really well in this clip. The technique is that simple….
I can’t stop watching Maharishi – he is amazing!
And Transcendental Meditation is a priceless gift.
Hmm…interesting. He certainly sounds like he knows what he’s talking about – and I know he does.
Isn’t his eyes just beautiful and full of peace and wisdom. Thanks for sharing this video. Peace
Bliss, happiness – yes I go for it!
You are especially beautiful, thanks a ton for your video recording. it is sad im living in Dover considering that i can’t purchase high quality makeup, on the other hand i find no charge cosmetic samples through ‘Gratis Makeup Samples’. i love Max factor makeup!
@ThanklessExpediency @Mystandrain NSR is definitely not Transcendental Meditation and could be dangerous as you said.
We recommend learning TM properly from certified teachers in order to get the proper guidance in the delicate process of transcending.
Best Wishes,
~MeditationChannel
@Mystandrain Wow, Sorry to hear about your experiences w/ TM. Thank you very much for your detailed explanation and advice. I truly appreciate it. There’s nothing more valuable than direct experience. I know now to be more careful and not just go head-long into some meditation program w/out proper preparation and expectations. Thanks again!
@ThanklessExpediency In any case, good luck. And be careful!
@ThanklessExpediency Anyway, that’s my experience. NSR isn’t TM in that different mantras are used. But it’s the same approach. The same type of meditation. Some people speak very highly of meditiation and I’m very happy for them but the positive effects they describe apart from the “wave of pure bliss” can in my opinion also be achieved through a healthy diet, taking enough time to think things through, getting plenty of exercize, facing your problems head-on etc.
@ThanklessExpediency This can be relaxing, for sure. But in a similar way to e.g. staring out the window. In my experience, there’s no “wave of pure bliss” or anything like that. You just end up sitting there quietly. Some people might actually experience something along the lines of a “wave of pure bliss” during SOME of their meditations but it may be the same as say hypnotism, in the sense that maybe some people are susceptible to it and others aren’t.
@ThanklessExpediency TM is a mantra meditation. So if you want to try that, you can do so yourself. Just use any word. Like “apple” or “honey”…it can be anything, really. What they say about certain sounds being needed to be able to do it isn’t true if you ask me. Anyway, sit with your eyes closed, repeating that word over and over, focussing solely on that sound. “Apple, apple, apple…” You’ll notice that you’ll become more quiet inside and your breathing will become less deep.
@ThanklessExpediency Ultimately, I got back to normal again but I was very worried the effects were irreversible for a while there. Very frightening. I think meditation doesn’t work in every case. The TM teacher I spoke to actually said he had had people telling them they experienced no positive effects whatsoever… I now think that how some people describe “transcending” is sometimes exaggerated and sometimes truthful…but some people describe having experienced nothing, as well. Like me.
@ThanklessExpediency I had a blackout during one of my first few meditations. When I awoke, 5 to 7 minutes had gone by. I remember automatically breathing in heavily right after I became conscious again as sort of a reflex. I think I didn’t breathe properly during the blackout which caused mild hypoxia (oxygen shortage in the brain). For about a month afterwards, my short term memory was pretty much gone, I couldn’t think clearly…it was like there was a gap in my mind.
@Mystandrain Hi, you mentioned that “NSR meditation screwed me up for a month”. I was wondering if you could explain what went wrong? I was looking into meditation and was just curious about what could happen, etc. Thanks.
@yellabeth What exactly do you experience when you “transcend”, yellabeth?
technically you are god.
AUM (mantra) opens the 3rd eye
Soham.. this means I = GOD. This is the most powerful mantra.
you can chant any of your desires though for law of attraction
@Hussein2512 Google, and the library.
The creator of “TM” essentially took the very fundamental basics of meditation, gave it a fancy name, and advertised it by appealing to his middle-aged, working-class target audience. You’ll see what I mean once you get your hands on any half-decent reading material on meditation.
Thanks : )
@djPIDJEON do you know a good book or article or video i can learn from ? and why do you say you can learn it by yourself, although the creator himself said NO
Incredible upbeat simple sharing of one man’s view of a useful tool which is now available to everyone to become a better person. I learned TM as a 12 year old when my brother came home from MIU what MUM used to be called in the 70′s and i didn’t utilize the gift after i went away to college at first. I had to realize it’s valua again after I met someone who meditated regularly and I came to MUM to become a Sidha in 2007. I use the 20 min technique and an extended program and it is amazing!
@BrideAndGroomFilmsHD I actually went ahead and tried to meditate. I called the local TM teacher and he said “Look, I’m going go on a holiday so I’ll get into contact with you when I return, ok? I can’t say when I’ll be able to teach you but I think it will be less than a month from now”. Subsequently I never heard anything until FOUR MONTHS later. Before then I had already tried NSR meditation which screwed me up for a month so I was no longer interested in TM. It’s not for everyone, I think.
@djPIDJEON Well, no. The teachers are full time and have families and bills to pay like you and I. Why shouldn’t they charge for it?
@Mystandrain Absolutely, yes. When I finish meditation I feel like just getting up and doing anything. My productivity has definitely increased.
I was very skeptical about it myself. So much so that I almost didn’t learn TM. It took me three years to actually go and do it. It’s been a few weeks and I’m very happy with it. It’s nice to chill and dive within. It’s a simple mental technique. That’s all. There’s no new age mumbo jumbo, thankfully, although there are people within the inner circles, deep within the movement who I think talk a load of nonsense, but hey, you get those people everywhere.
I’d love to learn TM but like many people, haven’t got the $1500 that is required to do so. Kinda makes you wonder if someone a while back had the idea of slapping a Trademark on something that has been taught for free for centuries.
I’m also suspicious of the way that TM spokespeople downgrade all other kinds of meditation in comparison to TM.
On the plus side, I’m a big David Lynch and Seinfeld fan ;D)
There you are!
your a weird and a strange mother fucker and look like a bug fuck off
I think you should really have included some more references in your video, to what Dr. Hagglin has been saying with his research in to Quantum mechanics. 20 Thousand people have seen this now, and you have failed to mention that SCIENCE is proving this to be correct. Thank you for your enthusiasm, you can barely contain it!
how do u learn Transcendental Meditation, i have adhd
