Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Frequently Effects Accident Victims

When people hear the term “post-traumatic stress disorder”, commonly referred to as PTSD, they usually think of military personnel, usually soldiers who have seen active duty or seen battle are what the general public think when they think of when they hear PTSD. What is not commonly know is that accidents, whether they are auto, truck, motorcycle, bicycle or even pedestrian accidents are a major cause of PTSD.

In a book published by the American Psychological Association called “After the Crash: Assessment and Treatment of Motor Vehicle Accident Survivors” it reports that within the general population motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It also reports that over three million people are victims of car wrecks that resulted in bodily injury and/or psychological distress.

PTSD is an anxiety disorder that can develop after a person is exposed to a traumatic event. During these events something horrible and frightening is happening and the person has a sense of helplessness. They may also feel like their life or the lives of others are in danger. Many of the common assumptions is that PTSD is isolated to war veterans but the reality is that any life-threatening events can cause this disorder. Some of the common events are:

- Combat or military exposure
- Child sexual or physical abuse
- Terrorist attacks
- Sexual or physical assault
- Serious accidents, such as a car wreck
- Natural disasters, such as a fire, tornado, hurricane, flood, or earthquake
- Being diagnosed with a potentially fatal illness
- Finding the body of someone who has committed suicide

There are many symptoms of PTSD. Some are:

- Distressing thoughts or images
- Be very startled when someone surprises you
- Nightmares about the event
- Feeling or acting as if the traumatic event were recurring
- Fear for your safety and always feel on guard
- Intense psychological distress when exposed to something that triggers memories of the traumatic event
- Physical symptoms such as sweating, muscle tension and rapid heartbeat when exposed to things that trigger memories of the traumatic event
- Suddenly become angry or irritable
- Have a hard time sleeping
- Have trouble concentrating

After a car accident the physical injuries are immediately treated, a broken arm is set and lacerations are stitched up. People need to understand that there may be more psychological injuries after an accident and be prepared to treat them. Also be aware that the symptoms can last for a long period of time. If you are an accident victim and feel like you may be suffering from PTSD don’t feel like you are alone or be embarrassed by your feelings. Let your doctor know. It is also something your attorney will need to know, it is important information as it is part of your suffering as a victim of a traumatic accident.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: Long Term Effects

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was called “shell shock” during World War I. The term we use today – PTSD – is less vivid and more clinical-sounding. But it refers to the same phenomenon: psychological and physical after-effects associated with traumatic experiences.

The disorder has proven difficult to study because its symptoms and their severity vary widely and often present differently in women than they do in men.

Though PTSD is still most popularly associated with veterans of military combat, it is believed to affect civilians who suffer severe abuse or other heightened forms of psychological and physical stress, such as sexual abuse or car accidents.

A new study published in the September 2009 Archives of General Psychiatry focused on soldiers returning from combat in the Iraq war. The study found that PTSD causes chemical changes in the brain that can linger for at least a year. Other studies have found that symptoms persist well beyond one year.

PTSD victims tend to be in a continuous state of heightened alertness. The trauma that precipitates the disorder essentially conditions them to be ever-ready for a life threatening situation to arise at any moment. As a result, they have increased reaction times, which might be characterized as a positive short-term gain. But the continuous release of brain chemicals that accompany this reaction time – and their inability to control when this heightened reactivity will occur – take psychological and biological tolls on PTSD victims over time.

The 2009 study also found that increased alertness was accompanied by a decrease in the ability to learn, retain or even pay attention to information not associated with combat situations. The chemical shift essentially redirects their brains to focus abnormally on immediate survival.

While the 2009 study did not find the soldiers’ neurological changes had any connection with depression or alcohol and drug abuse, other studies over the past 25 years have found addiction and chronic depression to be common in PTSD sufferers.

Other long term side effects of PTSD include an inability to sleep, vivid nightmares and obsessive thoughts surrounding the trauma. Sufferers are also tormented by an “alarm reaction” (http://www.childtrauma.org/ctamaterials/memory_states.asp), becoming jittery or even terrified when loud noises resemble sounds they associate with the trauma. For example, combat veterans often react as if they are being fired at by guns when they are startled by the noise of a car backfiring. Repeated instances of the alarm reaction tax the autonomic nerve system over time – which could result in decreased motor skills and coordination.

Sleep deprivation and the physical strain of prolonged hyper-alertness may eventually lead to a weakening of the body’s immune system. Other physical complications like cardiovascular disease could be directly related to the toll PTSD takes on the sufferer’s body over an extended period of time.

Emotional disorders like depression seem to be more common in female PTSD sufferers, while men appear more likely to develop addiction problems. Both genders have been found to suffer from panic attacks and violent fits anger. They have difficulty developing or maintaining relationships with other people.Continuous study will give us a clearer picture of what PTSD does to its sufferers in the long term.

A Natural Remedy For Hot Flashes – How To Be Side-effect Free!

If you’ve begun experiencing the “hormone hell” of menopause, you may be wondering just whose body you’re in! Your changing estrogen levels have sent your body’s temperature into a crazy burning/freezing cycle. You may be suffering mood swings and insomnia as well. Your menopausal hot flashes can start getting the best of you until you’ve had it! You need a solution just to get your life back to normal. But like many other women, you may be worried about hormone replacement therapy as a viable solution. A solution that works better for you and your body could be a natural remedy for hot flashes.

If you are able to control your hot flashes with a natural remedy your body will thank you. A natural remedy for hot flashes will have minimal – if any – side effects and can be relatively inexpensive. As with all medical treatments, whether natural or prescribed by your doctor, you should proceed carefully to ensure you don’t have an allergic reaction to a yet unknown allergen. A good strategy is to start with some simple changes that don’t require herbs or medications at all. Then slowly add other pieces to the puzzle until you have a solution that works for you.

First, try to avoid hot and humid weather. Since your inner thermostat has a mind of its own these days, running a bunch of errands in the heat may trigger a hot flash. The same can be said for hot tubs and saunas. Knowing your personal triggers is the first step when developing a natural remedy for hot flashes.

Common triggers for menopausal women include hot drinks, spicy foods, alcohol, stress, smoking, chocolate and foods with high-acid content. Now that you officially are not allowed to enjoy your favorite foods or indulgences you may wonder “what’s the point?” Just keep in mind that every woman will have different triggers. Some of these foods may not bother you at all. This list is meant as a guide, not as a “never do” list. It’s pretty rare to have all the items listed here as a trigger. Just knowing one or two triggers and then avoiding them will significantly help you in developing your personal natural remedy for hot flashes.

Once you discover your triggers, you are ready to proactively develop a complete game plan. Some natural quick fixes include drinking cold fluids when you feel a hot flash coming on, wearing layered clothing, and reducing your stress levels. Everyone can benefit from a few healthy stress reduction strategies. This is particularly important for women in menopause.

What helps ease stress in one woman, may just enhance it in another. Most people have a few stress reduction strategies that they utilize, but they’re more important than ever when developing a natural remedy for hot flashes that really works.

Many people exercise to help reduce stress. Even though it hasn’t been proven that exercise reduces hot flashes, many women report that it makes a significant difference in their frequency. A few other relaxation techniques you may not think of right off include acupuncture, meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises.

A great way to track your progress is to keep a hot flash journal. After you’ve tracked your symptoms for awhile, you’ll see which foods or drinks are triggers and what exercise and relaxation techniques seem to reduce your stress and hot flash symptoms. Hot flashes can be unbearable for some women. By employing a few of the above techniques you can develop a way to beat your misery with your own personalized natural remedy for hot flashes.

Discover the Natural Remedies That Work to Relieve Stress and Anxiety

We all live lives that are crammed with meetings, deadlines, and tons of stuff that can leave us stressed, anxious, and frazzled at the end of the day. Stress and anxiety can ruin our health. It affects our sleep, our energy, makes us look and feel older, and can even lead to various diseases and disorders. That’s why it’s important to take time out of our hectic day to relax. One of the best ways to relieve the stress and anxiety is with natural remedies. When used correctly, natural remedies can help you feel calm and relaxed. There are tons of remedies for stress and anxiety out there. The following are are some of the most effective:

Kava kava. This herb has been used for stress relief and relaxation, easing anxiety, and curing insomnia. The effects are considered to be similar to the prescription drug valium, but generally without the “mental fog” feeling. It is available in capsule, beverage, tablet, tincture, and extract form. Since the effects are so potent, you need to monitor its effect on you and should be careful what you do after taking it. Possible side effects include a potential for severe liver damage, blurred vision, nausea, loss of appetite, and shortness of breath. It can also negatively interact with any medication you may be on, so consult your physician before adding kava to your self-care regimen.

Lavender. Many people rely on lavender and other essential oils as a natural remedy to soothe crying, fussy babies. These oils have the same calming effect on adults as well. You can use it in the same way you would use other essential oils such as in a bath or in a sachet bag or pillow. There is rarely any bad side effects when using essential oils as a natural remedy, other than a possible allergic reaction to the oil or its scent.

Valerian. Sometimes referred to as “herbal Valium,” this natural remedy is widely used to relieve anxiety and insomnia. It calms the nervous system, making you feel calm and relaxed instead of stressed. In addition, since it helps you get a great night’s sleep, you’ll feel more refreshed and ready to face the next day. Available in capsule, tincture, liquid, extract, crude herb, and tea forms, there is no standard dose of valerian. Possible side effects through prolonged use include irregular heartbeat, headache, uneasiness, restlessness and insomnia. Like kava kava, this natural remedy can negatively interact with any medication you may be taking, so consult your physician before adding valerian to your regimen.

Tryptophan/5-HTP. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that the body uses to increase serotonin levels and manufacture niacin. 5-HTP is a close “cousin” to the amino acid and also increases the production of serotonin. Among other things, serotonin helps ease depression, anxiety, and the sensation of pain. Available in supplement form, there is no standard dose for treatment of anxiety with tryptophan/5-HTP. Possible side effects include nausea, diarrhea, and breathing difficulties. It may also negatively interact with medication you may be taking, so please consult your physician before adding tryptophan/5-HTP to your regimen.

With many prescriptions and over the counter medications, you can see an effect almost immediately. However, most natural remedies require longer periods of time to work before the full effect of the treatment is evident. If taken properly and with patience, these natural remedies can provide a safe and effective alternative to conventional drugs with fewer side effects. You should also talk to your doctor before starting any natural remedy supplement because they may have drug interactions.

Hopefully one or more of these remedies will relieve the stress and anxiety created by a busy life and help you lead a more relaxing and peaceful one.

Understanding Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

While many people associated post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, with military service, this anxiety disorder can actually arise after any type of stressful or terrifying event. When bad things happen, your mind can suffer from injury just as much as your body. PTSD is the way that the brain shows that it has been injured by an extremely frightening ordeal.

There are several different events that can cause the mind enough to shock to develop PTSD. Some common sources of this problem include:

Experiencing natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes
Being victimized in a criminal attack such as robbery or rape
Suffering in a severe car accident
Learning of extremely terrible news
Undergoing emotional, physical, or mental abuse
Involvement in a civil conflict

When diagnosing a person with PTSD, doctors look for three different types of symptoms. First, a person who truly has this disorder will often repeatedly relive the event. This may be through nightmares or flashbacks. Additionally, PTSD will manifest itself as abnormal avoidance of certain things that remind you of your horrifying ordeal. You may feel uncomfortable around people, locations, or things that make you think about the traumatic occurrence. This avoidance can turn into a phobia or even an emotional dissociation as a way of protecting yourself.

Lastly, PTSD often causes you to become hyper aware of your surroundings. While it is normal to be vigilant, extreme arousal can result in insomnia and blackouts. Also, you may notice that you have become more irritable after the event. You may also lose your ability to concentrate as your mind is distracted by perceived threats around you. Doctors and researchers have found that true PTSD results in at least one reliving symptom, as well as two issues with hyper-arousal and three problems with abnormal avoidance issues.

Once doctors determine that you truly do have PTSD, there are several things that you can do to help you with your disorder. First, many people undergo counseling to help them become more aware of the disorder and how they can manage it. This also gives you a chance to talk about the terrifying ordeal to help get it out of your mind. You can also undergo therapy to help you move past the ramifications of your illness. In some cases, you may need anti-depressants to help you with your symptoms. This especially helps with your environmental hyper-arousal.

If you suffer from a personal injury or other traumatic experience, your body may not be the only thing that is injured. If you develop PTSD as a result of someone else’s negligence, you may be entitled to financial compensation to help you with your suffering.
The PTSD or the post-traumatic stress disorder is easy to explain – this is a disorder that follows a traumatic incident. Your mind, filled with the horror and terror of the helplessness you felt during that particular incident, would overreact whenever anything triggers (or reminds you) about the scene. For example, a child is sexually abused by someone close in her or his family, but is unable to stop it or tell it to anyone. When this person grows up into an adult, he or she would have panic attacks every time he or she would be reminded of that incident. This could be a smell, a person who looks like the abuser, a particular word, a sound, a certain type of weather, a song and the like.

Some of the symptoms that should tell you are suffering from Post-traumatic stress disorder are:

1. Haunting thoughts – whatever you do, you are haunted by thoughts from the incident and these make you cringe from inside. These thoughts interfere with you ability to behave normally, to be happy. You would find that every time you relax a feeling of acute vulnerability engulfs you forcing you into a state of constant panic

2. Nightmares – since the incident has left deep emotional scars, which are unresolved until date you would be harassed by nightmares that might seem inconsequential, but which re-recreate the intense discomfort, pain and fear you felt during the incident

3. Inability to talk about it – you would find it impossible to discuss what you felt or feel with anyone. The mere thought of exposing your feelings would send you into a panic. Whenever attempts are made to have you open up on the subject, you would feel like hiding or running away than relieving the same situation over discussions

4. Negative empathy – you would also find it impossible to connect to anyone who has shared your type of trauma because you would see yourself in those other victims and the vision would be unbearable.

5. Depression – most people who suffer from PTSD would be victims of depression as well. You would loose interest in living, socializing, taking care of yourself and would rather commit suicide just to shut the pain off that is following you and refuses to go away. You feel trapped and victimized; you feel hopeless and worthless and often would be surprised that others even notice you, leave alone take into consideration your feelings or wishes. You would experience acute anxiety symptoms, which would heavily interfere with your performance and health.
