Chair Massage for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Traumatic experiences such as war, assault, abuse or devastating loss, can cause post-traumatic stress. Post-traumatic stress affects those who are unable to relegate their traumatic experiences to the past. Trauma survivors often become acutely aware of humans’ inability to control their circumstances. A traumatic experience also reinforces the unsettling notion that life is delicate and can be taken away or permanently altered at any time.

Unfortunately, many who experience severe trauma develop recurring symptoms that have a negative impact on their spiritual, emotional and physical well-being. Many victims of trauma cease to be comfortable in their own bodies. The repeated negative effects that occur as a result of a past trauma can be defined as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. Although talking with a counselor or therapist can help to bring the traumatic experience into perspective, the physical manifestations of PTSD can remain. Therapeutic massage is now being used to help those with PTSD to feel more secure and comfortable in their bodies, and help to re-establish proper feelings of closeness and intimacy with others.

The discomfort and anxiety that those with PTSD associate with touch can serve as an obstacle to their acceptance of massage as a form of treatment. It is not uncommon for survivors of assault or abuse to feel vulnerable or ashamed when having to expose their bodies. Chair massage can be extremely useful in such situations, as it does not require the client to disrobe. A chair massage is performed without oils and the short duration of the chair massage session can be a less threatening introduction to therapeutic touch.

Massage conveys encouragement, affirmation, comfort and positivity through touch. Clinical research on the effectiveness of massage therapy for PTSD has increased in the past several years and the analysis of data from recent studies points to the effectiveness of massage on a patient’s delayed evaluation of pain.

Chair massage provides a safe way for clients to appreciate touch and to gradually let go of physical pain. The respectful nature of the client-therapist relationship creates a safe environment in which the recipient knows that they are in complete control. This means that they can change or cease any part of the therapy at will. The client is empowered to take control of the ways in which they prefer to be touched, which allows them to safely experience feelings of intimacy. This can help those with PTSD to put their traumatic experience in the past by helping them to recognize that they can control the present.

Chair massage and full body massage sessions that are methodical and routine can be very reassuring for those with PTSD. Establishing boundaries and goals for each session and splitting the session into distinct phases aids the recipient in their acceptance of healthy touch. The client has the opportunity to recognize feelings that may have surfaced during the session and to begin to process them in a positive manner. Massage can help those with PTSD to be aware of their bodies in the present and to develop a nurturing method of self-care in their daily lives.

PTSD is a complex problem with a host of symptoms that can cause difficulties in the daily lives of those who suffer from it. Massage, performed by a therapist who is educated and respectful of the special needs of trauma survivors can provide comfort and help to foster a sense of hope for those who have been severely impacted by traumatic events.

Causes of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) occurs after someone experiences a traumatic event. This emotional illness causes sufferers to avoid things that remind them of their experience and to even relive the experience over and over. This brings on a massive amount of stress, anxiety, and anger. This influx of emotion is generally a reflection of how the sufferer felt during the experience and can be extremely difficult to control.

Not all traumatic events trigger PTSD, but the ones that do are life-threatening and extremely stressful. Many sufferers are military veterans or victims of criminal behavior, such as rape or a mugging. PTSD can also be caused by witnessing such events, such as a murder, and by abuse (physical, sexual, mental, or emotional). No one knows why only certain events trigger PTSD, or why certain people are prone to it. Despite a recent focus on the illness, it is not relatively new. “Shell shock” has been attributed to thousands of soldiers who were really experiencing PTSD.

To diagnose someone with PTSD, the patient must have experienced a traumatic event. Any kind of devastating experience can spark PTSD, and sometimes it is difficult to determine if the emotional response of a victim is normal or excessive. Often, PTSD cannot be diagnosed until after a normal grieving period. If, after several months, someone is still having intense emotional reactions to memories and reminds of a traumatic event, they may be suffering from PTSD.

Although PTSD may be difficult to diagnose, there are treatment options available. Therapy and medication have both been shown to improve the conditions of PTSD patients. The goal with treatment is to get the patient to have a normal emotional response, or even none at all, to memories and reminders of their traumatic experience. PTSD is caused by any kind of life-altering experience and forces sufferers to relive the terror and fear they felt while it was happening. With treatment, patients will be able to continue their lives without constant fear and anxiety.

Most mind blowing Cristina & Owen episode to date!!!ever? Owen falls asleep in Cristina’s bed. Cristina awakes to Owen strangling her, in a PTSD induced night terror. Callie hears noises coming from Cristina’s room and saves Cristina’s life. Cristina goes to work after being strangled. She and all her fellow residents are frightened as Izzie prepares for brain surgery to cut out a cancerous tumour. Derek has returned to Seattle Grace to perform the surgery. Owen has another “freezing moment” after a helicopter arrives at Seattle Grace with a trauma patient. Derek encourages Owen to seek help for PTSD. Derek performs surgery on Izzie. Cristina and Owen make love for the first time. Cristina breaks up with Owen, after telling him she is “afraid to fall asleep” next to him. ———————————————————– Why did I finish this one so much faster than usual? First, because Owen strangled Cristina, then they made love, then they broke up and then I lost my mind. Second, because I am not working Friday and Cristina and Owen made me lose my mind. I should have gone to bed; but I didn’t. I have never edited so fast, listened to so much music at the same time, done near anything so fast. My brain is on fire. I hope it turned out well. Now that I have gotten all those Cristina & Owen thoughts out of my brain, through the keyboard, now I can sleep. —————————————- Entire Cristina & Owen playlist here: www.youtube.com

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Frequently Effects Accident Victims

When people hear the term “post-traumatic stress disorder”, commonly referred to as PTSD, they usually think of military personnel, usually soldiers who have seen active duty or seen battle are what the general public think when they think of when they hear PTSD. What is not commonly know is that accidents, whether they are auto, truck, motorcycle, bicycle or even pedestrian accidents are a major cause of PTSD.

In a book published by the American Psychological Association called “After the Crash: Assessment and Treatment of Motor Vehicle Accident Survivors” it reports that within the general population motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It also reports that over three million people are victims of car wrecks that resulted in bodily injury and/or psychological distress.

PTSD is an anxiety disorder that can develop after a person is exposed to a traumatic event. During these events something horrible and frightening is happening and the person has a sense of helplessness. They may also feel like their life or the lives of others are in danger. Many of the common assumptions is that PTSD is isolated to war veterans but the reality is that any life-threatening events can cause this disorder. Some of the common events are:

- Combat or military exposure
- Child sexual or physical abuse
- Terrorist attacks
- Sexual or physical assault
- Serious accidents, such as a car wreck
- Natural disasters, such as a fire, tornado, hurricane, flood, or earthquake
- Being diagnosed with a potentially fatal illness
- Finding the body of someone who has committed suicide

There are many symptoms of PTSD. Some are:

- Distressing thoughts or images
- Be very startled when someone surprises you
- Nightmares about the event
- Feeling or acting as if the traumatic event were recurring
- Fear for your safety and always feel on guard
- Intense psychological distress when exposed to something that triggers memories of the traumatic event
- Physical symptoms such as sweating, muscle tension and rapid heartbeat when exposed to things that trigger memories of the traumatic event
- Suddenly become angry or irritable
- Have a hard time sleeping
- Have trouble concentrating

After a car accident the physical injuries are immediately treated, a broken arm is set and lacerations are stitched up. People need to understand that there may be more psychological injuries after an accident and be prepared to treat them. Also be aware that the symptoms can last for a long period of time. If you are an accident victim and feel like you may be suffering from PTSD don’t feel like you are alone or be embarrassed by your feelings. Let your doctor know. It is also something your attorney will need to know, it is important information as it is part of your suffering as a victim of a traumatic accident.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: Long Term Effects

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was called “shell shock” during World War I. The term we use today – PTSD – is less vivid and more clinical-sounding. But it refers to the same phenomenon: psychological and physical after-effects associated with traumatic experiences.

The disorder has proven difficult to study because its symptoms and their severity vary widely and often present differently in women than they do in men.

Though PTSD is still most popularly associated with veterans of military combat, it is believed to affect civilians who suffer severe abuse or other heightened forms of psychological and physical stress, such as sexual abuse or car accidents.

A new study published in the September 2009 Archives of General Psychiatry focused on soldiers returning from combat in the Iraq war. The study found that PTSD causes chemical changes in the brain that can linger for at least a year. Other studies have found that symptoms persist well beyond one year.

PTSD victims tend to be in a continuous state of heightened alertness. The trauma that precipitates the disorder essentially conditions them to be ever-ready for a life threatening situation to arise at any moment. As a result, they have increased reaction times, which might be characterized as a positive short-term gain. But the continuous release of brain chemicals that accompany this reaction time – and their inability to control when this heightened reactivity will occur – take psychological and biological tolls on PTSD victims over time.

The 2009 study also found that increased alertness was accompanied by a decrease in the ability to learn, retain or even pay attention to information not associated with combat situations. The chemical shift essentially redirects their brains to focus abnormally on immediate survival.

While the 2009 study did not find the soldiers’ neurological changes had any connection with depression or alcohol and drug abuse, other studies over the past 25 years have found addiction and chronic depression to be common in PTSD sufferers.

Other long term side effects of PTSD include an inability to sleep, vivid nightmares and obsessive thoughts surrounding the trauma. Sufferers are also tormented by an “alarm reaction” (http://www.childtrauma.org/ctamaterials/memory_states.asp), becoming jittery or even terrified when loud noises resemble sounds they associate with the trauma. For example, combat veterans often react as if they are being fired at by guns when they are startled by the noise of a car backfiring. Repeated instances of the alarm reaction tax the autonomic nerve system over time – which could result in decreased motor skills and coordination.

Sleep deprivation and the physical strain of prolonged hyper-alertness may eventually lead to a weakening of the body’s immune system. Other physical complications like cardiovascular disease could be directly related to the toll PTSD takes on the sufferer’s body over an extended period of time.

Emotional disorders like depression seem to be more common in female PTSD sufferers, while men appear more likely to develop addiction problems. Both genders have been found to suffer from panic attacks and violent fits anger. They have difficulty developing or maintaining relationships with other people.Continuous study will give us a clearer picture of what PTSD does to its sufferers in the long term.

Click here now to see what worked for me >> Natural cure for panic attacks >>

Who else wants to know the secrets of anxiety and anger and panic attack symptoms treatments that even your medical doctors are not telling you- guaranteed

A Panic attack is a very serious illness however it is very possible for you to overcome this illness and live a normal life. A Panic attack is a medical condition and if you are experiencing it often you should seek medical care in order to provide you with proper treatment either behavioural or with medications

Nocturnal panic attacks are much more difficult to diagnose than regular panic attacks due to the fact that they often get confused with bad dreams. There are plenty of folks who are troubled with nocturnal panic attacks and are completely oblivious of it. Except of course for the symptoms that they fail to recognize

Panic attacks happen to people as a result of a variety of triggers. Because people who suffer from such attacks do not have a single trigger to attribute their condition to there’s also no standard treatment. However one such popular treatment for panic attack is psychotherapy. This when used with other treatments that complement its effectiveness is used to treat panic and anxiety attacks

Panic attacks are more common in daytime. Studies show that 90% of panic attack sufferers go through their ordeal within their busy hours. Ordinarily that will be within office hours where the stress level is at its peak level

On average fourteen million Americans suffer from major Panic Attack and depression. Three million Americans suffer from panic disorder. It is very common for those with major depression to also have panic attacks and elevated anxiety levels

Understanding Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

While many people associated post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, with military service, this anxiety disorder can actually arise after any type of stressful or terrifying event. When bad things happen, your mind can suffer from injury just as much as your body. PTSD is the way that the brain shows that it has been injured by an extremely frightening ordeal.

There are several different events that can cause the mind enough to shock to develop PTSD. Some common sources of this problem include:

Experiencing natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes
Being victimized in a criminal attack such as robbery or rape
Suffering in a severe car accident
Learning of extremely terrible news
Undergoing emotional, physical, or mental abuse
Involvement in a civil conflict

When diagnosing a person with PTSD, doctors look for three different types of symptoms. First, a person who truly has this disorder will often repeatedly relive the event. This may be through nightmares or flashbacks. Additionally, PTSD will manifest itself as abnormal avoidance of certain things that remind you of your horrifying ordeal. You may feel uncomfortable around people, locations, or things that make you think about the traumatic occurrence. This avoidance can turn into a phobia or even an emotional dissociation as a way of protecting yourself.

Lastly, PTSD often causes you to become hyper aware of your surroundings. While it is normal to be vigilant, extreme arousal can result in insomnia and blackouts. Also, you may notice that you have become more irritable after the event. You may also lose your ability to concentrate as your mind is distracted by perceived threats around you. Doctors and researchers have found that true PTSD results in at least one reliving symptom, as well as two issues with hyper-arousal and three problems with abnormal avoidance issues.

Once doctors determine that you truly do have PTSD, there are several things that you can do to help you with your disorder. First, many people undergo counseling to help them become more aware of the disorder and how they can manage it. This also gives you a chance to talk about the terrifying ordeal to help get it out of your mind. You can also undergo therapy to help you move past the ramifications of your illness. In some cases, you may need anti-depressants to help you with your symptoms. This especially helps with your environmental hyper-arousal.

If you suffer from a personal injury or other traumatic experience, your body may not be the only thing that is injured. If you develop PTSD as a result of someone else’s negligence, you may be entitled to financial compensation to help you with your suffering.
