<p>There are many brainwave sound generator software available to download from internet. Some of them or free and recorded to create a specific result. I never used anyone of them before.  I always prefered to meditate to alter my level of consciousness and feel all the benefits in my daily life. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>Thousands of studies show the benefits of meditation in the long term. It takes some time to reach the level of focus needed to have real effects. The more often and the longer you practice meditation, the better you will be.  It may take a lifetime to reach the master’s level.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The benefits of meditation include lower level of stress, calmness, peace of mind to name just a few. Indirect result is a better health both physical and spiritual.  It can also lead to more happiness, joy and serenpidity.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Meditation works for me because I have the time and discipline to do it every day. It is well documented to modify beta, alpha and theta brainwaves as recorded on EEG during Zen monk’s meditation.</p>

<p><strong>Brainwave meditation</strong> has its roots in the seventies, when Transcendental Meditation (TM) was in vogue (remember the Beatles &#8211; Maharishi connection?). At that time many studies were performed in order to substantiate from a scientific perspective the amazing effects credited to meditation. The results were intriguing to say the least.</p>
<p> It was known back then that our brains generate electrical wave patterns known as brainwaves. The four distinct patterns (frequencies) are Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta. They&#8217;re measured in Hertz (Hz = cycles per second). It was also known that:</p>
<p><strong>Beta brainwave</strong> (13-34 Hz) is the daily pattern for most of us. Anxiety and stress are most likely to occur in the high Beta range. </p>
<p><strong>Alpha brainwaves</strong> (8 to 12 Hz) occur when we are relaxed and calm. You are in Alpha brainwave when you daydream for example, but also when you are focused in studying something that gets your undivided attention. </p>
<p><strong>Theta brainwave</strong> (4 to 7 Hz) is a deeply relaxed state, specific to regular sleep. It is also a creative state when achieved in a wakeful state. Supposedly artistic masterpieces were created in such a state. </p>
<p><strong>Delta brainwave</strong> (0.5 to 3 Hz) is the state of dreamless sleep which occurs soon after you fall asleep. 
<p>It was discovered during these studies that Delta is also the brainwave achieved by accomplished meditators during the state of deep meditation. The key discovery pertinent to brainwave meditation is that external stimulation of the brain with such frequencies, produces similar states of mind as achieved with meditation.</p>
<p> From a technical stand point this external stimulus was produced by sound: the desired frequency is the difference between the signal heard with each ear. For example: one ear gets 100 Hz and the other 110Hz. This produces a difference of 10 Hz specific to the Alpha brainwave.</p>
<p> It was demonstrated that the brain integrates the two signals also called <strong>binaural beats</strong>, in a process called <strong>brainwave entrainment</strong> or brainwave synchronization. The base frequency (100 Hz above) is called carrier frequency.</p>
<p> The most important output of these studies was the fact that if done properly, the exposure to these frequencies forced the brain to adapt by creating new neural connections (read rewiring) similar to many years of practicing classical meditation.</p>
<p> This output is reinforced by the new (at that time) concept of brain plasticity <strong>(Neuroplasticity)</strong>: the brain&#8217;s capability to adapt to a new stimulus by creating new connections or reassigning specific function to different zones. It was previously considered that the brain does not physically change and is stagnant as &#8220;hardware&#8221; from very early stages in life. It was demonstrated in other words that the &#8220;software&#8221; could change the original &#8220;hardware&#8221;.</p>

<p>It was proposed that a binaural beat occurs in the brain if you apply slightly different frequency sine waves independently but simultaneously to each ear. This beat affect is created by the brain itself and is largely due to the structure of the brain&#8217;s internal wiring.</p>
<p>These binaural beats are auditory brainstem responses, originating in the superior olivary nucleus of each hemisphere of the brain due to the interaction of the two different impulses.</p>
<p>The frequency of the two tones is between one and 30 Hz. Lets take the example that the difference between the two tones is 10 Hz. This 10 Hz difference is experienced within the superior olivary nuclei as a beat . The brain has a tendency, through the frequency following response, to resonate at the same frequency as the auditory stimuli being presented. In our example this would be 10 Hz, which is that frequency of the Alpha state. If we offer a binaural frequency of 5 Hz, the brain will begin to resonate with that and produce Theta brainwaves. If we present a binaural beat of 3 Hz, Delta brainwaves are detected. Alpha, Theta and Delta brainwaves are connected to altered states of consciousness that can be used to reprogram the subconscious mind, eliminate negative thought schemas and release emotional connection to memories.</p>
<p>In layman&#8217;s terms all this means is that you can relax, put on some stereo headphones and let your mind synchronize with the binaural beat frequency to create real measurable changes in your mind and body.</p>
<p>There are immediate benefits of using these beats such as the creation of relaxed states, aided sleep or even energy boosts. However, this is not the limit of binaural beat technology. It is also possible to produce very unusual states of consciousness like lucid dreaming, creativity, out-of-body experiences, and transcendental meditation, to name but a few. These can be used to instantly create a variety of different states such as sleep, meditation, creativity, lucid dreaming etc. You can also get your hands on software to create your own binaural beats but I believe, when dealing with brain entrainment, this should be left to those with more experience.
